Choosing the right tonebar length is about what feels good in your hand. For many players, the sweet spot is a tonebar that rests comfortably in the pocket between the thumb and index finger and reaches just slightly past the tip of the index finger. From there, it’s worth playing around with weight and size: heavier bars can beef up your sustain, while bars with a wider diameter will open up your vibrato.
Traditional sizes offer a solid starting point: 10-string steel players tend to go for 3-1/4” and 3-3/8” lengths, and 12-string players most often prefer 3-9/16" and 3-3/4” lengths. In recent years, 3-9/16” has proven to be a versatile, all-around choice for many steel guitar players.
